死なない生物と長生きな生物

地球上に死なない生物がいたとは知りませんでした。上の画像の生物ですが、「Turritopsis nutricula」または「Immortal Jellyfish」と呼ばれているらしいです。(cf. Wikipedia)

Since it is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again, there may be no natural limit to its life span. Scientists say the hydrozoan jellyfish is the only known animal that can repeatedly turn back the hands of time and revert to its polyp state (its first stage of life).

Because they are able to bypass death, the number of individuals is spiking. They’re now found in oceans around the globe rather than just in their native Caribbean waters. “We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion,” says Dr. Maria Miglietta of the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute.

成熟したらまた Polyp(cf. Wikipedia) の段階に戻るらしい。これを繰り返すので生命としての限界がない、という事ですね。現在研究がなされているらしいです。Yahoo! の記事の下部が格好良いです。

Turritopsis nutricula は死を回避できるので、個体の数が急激に増えている。現在、彼らは由来のカリビアンだけでなく、地球上の様々な海で見つけられる。Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute の Dr. Maria Minglietta が言うには「我々は世界規模の静かなる侵略を目の当たりにしている」との事だ。

といった訳でしょうか。「silent invasion」は格好良い言葉ですね。死なないので、食べられたりして外部からの攻撃を受けなければ生き続けていられます。食料はどうしているのか分かりませんが、不測の事態が無ければ増え続けるでしょう。海がこのクラゲだらけになる日が来るのかもしれません。人間が食料などにするかもしれませんが。

死なないわけではないですが、かなり長生きな生物も地球上にはいます。すぐに思い浮かぶのは亀などだ思います。Mother Nature Network のサイト(10 animals with the longest life spans) で10匹を抜粋して載せてくれていますので、見てみると面白いと思います。

Tortoises are considered the longest living vertebrates on Earth. One of their oldest known representatives was Harriet, a Galápagos tortoise that died of heart failure at the age of 175 years in June 2006 at a zoo owned by the late Steve Irwin. Harriet was considered the last living representative of Darwin’s epic voyage on the HMS Beagle.

亀は175年生きたらしい。人間の2倍ぐらいですね。「鶴は万年亀は千年」などと言われていますが。

Koi are an ornamental, domesticated variety of the common carp. The are common in artificial rock pools and decorative ponds. Amazingly, some varieties are capable of living more than 200 years. The oldest known koi was Hanako, a fish that died at the age of 226 on July 7, 1977.

ハナコという鯉が226年生きたらしい。人間の3倍くらい。

Perhaps due to the extremely low temperatures of the Antarctic Ocean, this immobile creature has an extremely slow growth rate. Some estimate the oldest known specimens are 1,550 years old.
